From Special Collections: The WAVES on parade in Florence, May 30, 1943. Photograph by Walter E. Corbin. This photograph shows prospective officers in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service Officer Training Center at Smith College marching in the Florence Memorial Day parade. The Navy trained officers at Smith from August 1942 through December 1944. On the right in the back of the photograph, just behind the row of young bikers, you can see the original smaller barrel-roof form of the Miss Florence Diner, which had been opened only two years before by Maurice Alexander.#flashbackfriday
