Fresh East Wind Morning
Image ID: ART081A pastel painting of the sea. Oil pastel on wood panel, l.l. signed and dated 1915.
This painting in thought to be one of a series of seascapes that Tryon titled "Sea Phases," to represent "different hours of the day and night." The paintings, which came to be known as "Sea Moods," were done mostly in 1915 during a fishing trip to Ogunquit, Maine. Noted art collector Charles L. Freer bought twenty of the series. A few others were sold separately, following a special showing of the collection at Smith College in 1916. In writing of the seascapes, Freer Gallery curator, Linda Merrill, suggests that the "artist maintained a constant view while the aspect of the ocean changed with the hours."
