Isaac C. Bates (1779-1845) was a prominent attorney who settled in Northampton in 1805. Within three years, he was elected to the Massachusetts Legislature and in 1827, was sent by the people of Western Massachusetts to the United States Congress as a Whig and an "anti-Jackson man." He also served as a United States Senator from 1841 until his death in Washington four years later. His eulogy was given by his great friend Daniel Webster.
