Senator Bates' wife, Martha Henshaw Bates (1783-1874), came from a prominent Northampton family, one of eight children of Samuel and Martha Hunt Henshaw. The Bates family maintained a home on Bridge Street for many years, even while Isaac served in Boston and Washington.
