George Herbert McCord

American landscape painter George H. McCord was born in New York City in 1848 and died there in 1909. At the age of only 22, in 1870, he first exhibited at the National Academy, where he was elected as Associate ten years later. Among his most important works are scenes of New York State, including Niagara's "Cave of the Winds" and Washington Irving's home, "Sunnyside." McCord also lived and worked in Europe, where he painted the striking scenes of boats in full sail in the Dutch harbor of Dordrecht, a picturesque port city long attractive to artists.

The painting was gifted to the Forbes Library in 1950 from the estate of Mrs. Annie Hill Childs, widow of Charles E. Childs, who opened Childs Park to the people of Northampton in 1915. Mrs. Childs, also noted for her generosity, left a valuable collection of Japanese carved ornaments, Indian baskets, and other curios to the Library, as well as the painting.

Cleaned in 1994, McCord's painting, with its vivid colors, again graces the Library walls.
