Alan James Robinson
Born in 1950, local Easthampton graphic artist, sculptor, and book designer Al Robinson was named by Esquire Magazine in 1984 as one of "the best of a new generation of men and women under 40 who are changing America." He studied art as a graduate student as the University of Massachusetts and woodblock-cutting under renown local artist Barry Moser. In 1979, Robinson founded Cleloniidae Press, a fine press publisher of limited editions and graphic portfolios.
Robinson is best known for his illustrated books of Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat and The Raven, and for a collection of early animals called An Odd Bestiary. In the early 1980's, he presented the Art and Music Department of Forbes Library with six lithographs of classical composers: Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Saint Saens, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner.
