portrait of Roswell Hubbard

The portrait was a gift to the Library in 1943 by Mrs. A.Z. Bogert of River Edge, N.J. She was the widow of Edward Herrick, maternal grandson of Roswell Hubbard. Herrick's father had lived on Green Street. Northampton resident Roswell Hubbard (1780-1854), identified in this portrait by his huge bow tie and grimly set mouth, lived in Northampton from 1823-1846. He was a wealthy gentleman farmer, acquiring the old Parson homestead at 392 Bridge Street. His son, the Rev. Fordyce M. Hubbard, married a daughter of Isaac C. Bates. (Notes the Harding portraits of his son's-in-law's)
