Copy of a Portrait of Pliny Earle
Image ID: ART092oil, 29" x 25", cleaned, 1964
Portrait of Pliny Earle. Copy by Louise Appleton Bradbury of work of Northampton artist Charles C. Burleigh, Jr.
Mrs. Louise Bradbury (1863-1932), sister-in-law of Forbes Librarian Charles Cutter, was known as a superb copyist of the works of others. She lived and worked in Winchester, Mass. for many years but, after the death of her husband, spent a few years living with the Cutters in Northampton. Her two commissions from Forbes Library included one of a portrait of Charles E. Forbes (from his death mask) and this one of Dr. Earle.
Pliny Earle (1809-1892), a medical doctor, served for many years as director of the then-called Northampton Lunatic Hospital. At his death, he left cash and property worth over $60,000 to establish the "Pliny Earle Fund," the interest of which should be ever used to "defray the necessary current expenses of the Forbes Library when the same shall be ready for use."
