Maitland De Gogorza
A late-19th century conception of Northampton's Main Street was sketched, in 1936, by local artist, Maitland De Gogorza, a member of the Smith College Art Department. De Gogorza focused on Meeting House Hill (where the Courthouse now stands), the center of activity in 1786. The drawing was commissioned by the Daily Hampshire Gazette in honor of the paper's 150th anniversary (1786 to 1936). It is interesting to note that the artist was married to Geraldine Lee, the daughter of Gerald Stanley Lee, whose portrait by Rembski also is part of the Forbes Library permanent collection.
