William H. Bartlett
London artist, W.H. Bartlett (1809-1854), was already an accomplished book illustrator by the time he teamed up with American author, Nathaniel P. Willis, in 1836-37, for a year-long project to draw and write about America. Bartlett traveled around the country, sketching a series of views and ultimately would form the basis for the book American Scenery, published by noted British illustrated book-publisher George Virtue. He was probably in Northampton in 1837, sketching his view across Main Street from the porch of J.B. Vinton's inn.
The Forbes etching, engraved by R. Sands, is a copy of the original Bartlett drawing that appeared in Virtue's book.
unsigned and undated; printed R. Sands, engraved.
