From Special Collections: Gothic Seminary at 60 Gothic Street. Originally Miss Dwight’s School for Young Females, later Shady Lawn Sanitarium and St. Michael’s School and the building from which Gothic Street received its name. This photo was taken ca.1903. The construction of the school was considered a notable and progressive achievement for the town at the time. There is some evidence that girls had been allowed to attend schools in Northampton in the early years of its formation. By the time of the revolution, the public education of girls in Northampton schools became a contentious issue which generated much public debate for decades to come. Built c.1835, designed by Thomas Pratt, demolished 1915. #throwbackthursday
