Levi Brooks

Private Levi Brooks

Portrait of Private Levi Brooks, member of the 27th MA Regiment, Company A. He was born on November 18th, 1822 and was enlisted from September 16th, 1861 to September 27th, 1864. The 1868-69 Northampton Directory lists him as a laborer living on Hospital Rd. He died on October 9th, 1902 and is buried at Bridge St. Cemetery at 38, Div. 4, Brewster Walk. He was a member of GAR Post #86.

Levi Brooks 27th Regt. - Comrade Levi Brook

Who was born the eighteenth day of November A.D. 1822 in Norwich COunty of Hampshire State of Massachusetts

 

He entered the army as a Private in Springfield in Co. A. 27 Regt. Infantry Mass. Vols. and was discharged at that place on the expiration of his term of service. September 27, 1864.

Among his intimate comrades in the service were Richard Abbott, Whitney Braman, Theodore Place, Justin Suman, and Henry Dickenson.

His first battle was at Roanoke Island, N.C. and he afterwards participated in the following engagements: - Gum Swamp, N.C. Kingston, N.C. Little Washington N.C. Wilderness, Va. Spottsylvania Court House Va. Cold Harbor, Va. Petersburg, Va. Bermuda Hundred, Va.

At the battle of Gum Swamp in the fall of 1862, he was wounded and was confined in Cottaeg Hospital, Newbern, N.C.

The battle in Virginia at Cold Harbor and Petersburg, he thinks were the most important in his service.

 

Edwin C. Clark

Lieutenant Edwin C. Clark

Portrait of 1st Lieutenant Edwin C. Clark, member of the 27th MA Regiment, Company A; he also served on the 52nd Regiment, Company C. He was born on October 23rd, 1826 and was enlisted from October 16th, 1861 to August 14th, 1863. The 1868-69 Northampton Directory lists him as a farmer living on South St. and the 1880 U.S. Census lists him as Superintendent of a Street Railroad in Northampton. He died on May 10, 1898 and is buried at Bridge St. Cemetery at 157, Div. 3, Allen Ave. . He was a member of GAR Post #86.

Edwin C. Clark 27th Regt. - Comrade Edwin Cook Clark

Who was born the twenty third day of October A.D. 1826 in Northampton County of Hampshire State of Massachusetts

 

He enlisted as a Private in Co A. 27th Regt. Aug. 6, 1861, and during his term of enlistment he held these offices, - 2nd Lieut, 1st Lieut. and Quarter Master. He was promoted Oct. 18, 1861, to 2nd Lieut, Sept. 9, 1862. to 1st Lieut and Nov. 20, 1862, to Quarter Master.

He was discharged March 26, 1862 at Newbern but re-enlisted and served til the expiration of his term of service when he was discharged at Greenfield Mass. August 14, 1863.

He was in engagements at Roanoke Island and Newbern.

For a time he was confined in the Brashire City hospital and also in the Private Hospital at New Orleans, La.

 

Edwin M. Cobb

Private Edward Cobb

Portrait of Private Edward Cobb, member of the 27th MA Regiment, Company G. He was born May 20, 1833 and was enlisted from October 21st, 1861 to June 14th, 1865. He lists his profession as broommaker at the time of his Civil War Draft registration. On May 1st, 1868 he married Mary A. Dady of Northampton. The 1868-69 Northampton Directory lists him as living on Prospect St. and shortly thereafter he and Mary moved to Chesterfield where they remained for the rest of his life. He died on March 22nd, 1907 and is buried at Bridge St. Cemetery at 42, Div. 4, Locust St.  

John F. Hannum

John F. Hannum

Portrait of John F. Hannum, member of the 27th MA Regiment, Company G. He was born January 7, 1827 and married Keziah Snow July 28, 1846. He enlisted on October 1, 1861, was promoted to full Corporal on Feb 1, 1863 and was mustered out on June 14, 1865. The 1868-69 Northampton Directory lists him as living on Warner Rd. and the 1870 U.S. Census has him living nearby the Warner's Silk Mill in Florence and working as a brick mason. After his wife Keziah's death in February 1875, he continues to work as a brick mason in Northampton before moving to North Adams to stay with his son George Howe Hannum around 1900.  He died February 24, 1904 at the Togus National Soldiers Home in Togus, Maine and is buried in Togus National Cemetery.

 

J. A. Polmatier

Private Jonas A. Polmatier

Portrait of Jonas A. Polmatier, member of the 27th Regiment, Company G. The 1868-69 Northampton Directory lists him as working at the Florence Sewing Machine Company in Florence, MA. He is buried at Spring Grove Cemetary at 55, Section 3-A. He was born in 1840 and died on April 27th, 1928. He was GAR post 86 and was enlisted from October 14th, 1861 to October 28th, 1862.

Thomas O. Morton

Private Thomas D. Morton

Portrait of Private Thomas D. Morton, member of the 27th Regiment, Company G. The 1868-69 Northampton Directory lists him as living in Hadley, MA. He is buried at Bridge St. Cemetary at 368, Div. 6-B, Greenwood Ave. He was born in 1826 and died on September 1st, 1900. He was GAR post 86 and was enlisted from October 17th, 1861 to June 26th, 1865.

Thomas O. Morton 27th Regt. - Comrade Thomas O. Morton

Who was born the twenty seventh day of March A.D. 1825 in Ypsilanti County of _____ State of Michigan

 

He entered the service Oct. 14. 1861 as a Private in 27 Regt. Mass. Vols. at Annapolis Md.

About Jan. 1, 1864, he was discharged at Norfolk, Va. but re-enlisted and continued in the service untill [sic] June 26, 1865 when he was again discharged at Newburn N.C. by orders from the War Department.

His first engagement was at Newburn N.C. Mar. 14, 1862 and he was later engaged at Kingston N.C. Dec. 14, 1862. Whitehall Dec 15, ‘62 Goldsboro Dec 17, 1862 and Gum Swamp, May 23, 1863.

During the months of November and December 1861, he was confined in a hospital at Annapolis, Md.,

Thomas Lasake, Lucius Smith, Lewis West, Edward Cobb, John Manax, and Wm Q. White were among his intimate comrades.

Portrait of Sergeant Theodore M. Place, member of the 27th Regiment, Company A. The 1868-69 Northampton Directory lists him as a farmer living on North St. He is buried at Bridge St. Cemetary at 285, Div. 6-B, Myrtle Ave. He was born in 1843 and died on August 12th, 1905. He was GAR post 86 and was enlisted from September 12th, 1861 to September 22nd, 1864.

Sylvanus Smith

Portrait of Private Sylvanus Smith, member of the 27th Regiment, Compnay A. The 1868-69 Northampton directory lists him as living on West St. He is buried at Bridge St. Cemetary at 560 1-2, Div. 2-B. He was born in 1823 and died on June 7th, 1915. He was GAR post 86 and was enlisted from September 11th, 1861 to September 27th, 1864.

Portrait of Private Francis B. Willard, member of the 27th Regiment, Company A. He is bured at Bridge St. Cemetary at 319, Div. 6-B, Myrtle Ave. He was born in 1843 and died on August 11th, 1915. He was GAR post 86 and enlisted from September 20th, 1861 to September 27th, 1864.
